Kent Police arrested a 38-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman on suspicion of arson and later released them while investigations continue. Police are treating the fire as suspicious and appealing for witness statements and dashcam footage. The cause of the fire has not been officially determined.
Emergency response efforts included the establishment of a welfare centre at Three Hills Sports Park by Folkestone and Hythe District Council. The local authority also relocated 90 residents from neighbouring Pavilion Court following safety inspections and structural concerns. Local businesses, including The Harbour Inn pub opposite the hotel, opened their doors to provide warmth and shelter for evacuees in the immediate aftermath.
Britannia Hotels Group, operator of the Grand Burstin, stated it was fully cooperating with authorities and supporting those affected. Engineers and building inspectors conducted structural assessments at the site, and the council has been arranging alternative housing for residents while the hotel undergoes safety works. Road closures remained in place as emergency services continued their investigation.
