A news helicopter operated by Angel City Air crashed in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday, September 15, around 7 p.m. local time, killing at least three people. The aircraft, designated NewsChopper4, was providing aerial coverage for NBC4 and Telemundo 52 when it struck the ground between two commercial buildings in the 9100 block of North Mason Avenue. The crash caused a fire that damaged four vehicles and two storage containers. Los Angeles Fire Department responded with 56 firefighters, and the fire was completely extinguished without spreading to nearby structures.
The three confirmed deceased include reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, both Angel City Air employees who had flown together since 2023. A third person killed was a pedestrian on the ground near the crash site. One additional person near the scene was transported to a local hospital; authorities reported this person had suffered an apparent panic attack. The exact number of people aboard the helicopter at the time of the crash has not been confirmed.
The helicopter crashed less than one mile from the scene of a separate Metro bus collision that occurred earlier the same evening, in which an SUV struck a Metro bus, killing three people and injuring five others. Multiple television news helicopters were in the area reporting on the bus accident when the NBC aircraft went down. According to witness accounts, the helicopter appeared to be swaying before striking the ground, and it erupted into a fireball upon impact.
Moreno was born in Orange County and graduated from Chapman University in 2010 with a degree in broadcast journalism and political science. She joined Angel City Air in September 2010 and reported for several Southern California media outlets. Marciniw, a 1974 graduate of Burbank High School, grew up in Southern California.
The cause of the crash remains unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration announced they will investigate the incident. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom both issued statements expressing condolences to the families of those killed in both the helicopter crash and the bus collision.
