Apple unveiled a redesigned MacBook Pro on October 28, 2026, featuring the first touchscreen display on a Mac laptop. The 14-inch and 16-inch models introduce PROLED XDR, a tandem OLED display technology delivering 2,000 nits peak brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 120Hz variable refresh rate. The touchscreen supports multi-touch gestures including pinch-to-zoom, scrolling, and drawing, enabling users to interact with 3D models and virtual instruments directly on screen.
The new MacBook Pro is powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max chips with up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage. The redesign emphasizes portability: the 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds and the 16-inch weighs 4 pounds, representing a significant reduction from previous generations. Additional features include a Dynamic Island cutout on the display (similar to iPhone), an enhanced six-speaker audio system with 50 percent deeper bass, a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life.
The move marks a reversal of Apple's longstanding position against touchscreen laptops. Former CEO Steve Jobs was famously opposed to the concept, and Apple had previously criticized touchscreen laptop designs while introducing the Touch Bar—a now-discontinued narrow touch strip on earlier MacBook Pro models. Current CEO John Ternus, who took the role recently, presented the new touchscreen MacBook Pro at an in-person-only event in Los Angeles.
Apple positioned the PROLED XDR display as reference-calibrated for content creators, photographers, colorists, and designers, emphasizing uniform brightness and grayscale across the screen while minimizing internal reflections common in traditional OLED designs. The touchscreen sensor is embedded directly into the display panel rather than layered on top, reducing latency. A stabilizing hinge was engineered to prevent screen wobbling during touch input and to stabilize the camera feed during video calls.
The 14-inch touchscreen MacBook Pro starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399. Pre-orders began October 28, with general availability on November 6. The announcement follows Apple's unveiling of a standard MacBook Pro with M6 chips (starting at $1,999) on October 27 and an iPad Mini with upgraded OLED display on October 26.
Why This Matters
Apple's introduction of touchscreen capability on MacBook Pro represents a shift in the company's product strategy for laptops, directly affecting content creators, designers, and video professionals who may now interact with 3D models and creative software through direct touch input. The shift also signals a potential industry trend toward hybrid input methods on portable computers. Pricing starting at $2,899 for the 14-inch model positions this product in the premium segment, affecting purchasing decisions across creative and enterprise markets. The November 6 availability date marks when supply and demand dynamics will first be measurable.
