Real Betis hosts Málaga in first LaLiga derby since 2018

Real Betis and Málaga CF meet at La Cartuja stadium on 31 October 2026 in their first LaLiga encounter in eight years, marking the undécima jornada (11th round) of the season. The Andalusian derby carries emotional weight due to multiple player reunions: manager Manuel Pellegrini led Málaga for three seasons and guided them to the 2012-13 Champions League quarter-finals; captain Isco, one of Málaga's most prominent recent players, will reach 400 LaLiga appearances in this match; Diego Llorente spent one season on loan at Málaga from Real Madrid in 2016-17, making 25 appearances and scoring two goals; and Pablo Fornals, aged 30 and a Spanish international, debuted in LaLiga with Málaga in 2015 after progressing through their academy, where he made 63 official appearances and scored seven goals. Fornals has previously expressed emotional attachment to Málaga and the city.

Betis enter the match needing a win to maintain their position in Champions League qualification spots, but face absences including Cucho Hernández, Junior Firpo, and Bernal. The team fielded: Valles; Bellerín, Bartra, Natan, García; Roca, Fornals, Riquelme, Isco, Abde; Parrott.

Málaga arrive bottom of the table with five points from five draws and five defeats, still without a league victory this season. However, they enter the match buoyed by a recent Copa del Rey victory against Sporting de Alcázar (3-0) and a 1-1 draw with Alavés. The team faces multiple absences: Pablo Martínez, Joaquín Muñoz, Juan Cruz, Julen Lobete, Aarón Ochoa, and Ángel Recio are unavailable, while Diego Murillo continues recovery and was not rushed into selection. Coach Juanfran Funes aims to convert recent defensive solidity and intensity into the team's first league victory. Málaga's lineup included: Herrero; Puga, Galilea, Calero, Rafita; Dotor, Ramón, Larrubia, Lorenzo, Aznou; Niño.

Málaga returned to LaLiga this season following promotion after a period in lower divisions. The club experienced a historic golden era in the early 2010s, when both Pellegrini and Isco helped establish Málaga as a top-tier Spanish club before departing for bigger opportunities. Pellegrini later became manager of Betis, while Isco established himself as a Betis captain.
