Germany, Ukraine to Produce Tens of Thousands of SPYS Interceptor Drones by Late 2026
Quantum Systems and WIY have signed a letter of intent to deliver tens of thousands of SPYS interceptor drones to Ukraine by late 2026, with serial production in Ukraine funded by Germany. The drones are engineered to counter Russian Geras-4 and Geras-5 drones and can reach speeds of 480–600 km/h with production planned to scale to several thousand units monthly.
Quick Facts
- Letter of intent signed for tens of thousands of SPYS interceptor drones
- Joint development of SPYS drones by Quantum Systems and WIY
- Serial production on Ukrainian soil funded by German federal government
- SPYS drones designed to intercept Geras-4 and Geras-5 Russian drones
- Production capability scaling to several thousand units per month

German defense company Quantum Systems and Ukrainian firm WIY have signed a letter of intent to supply tens of thousands of SPYS interceptor drones to Ukraine by the end of 2026, according to Quantum Systems Vice President Matthias Lehna. The agreement was announced at a briefing in Berlin on October 8, 2026.
The SPYS drones are jointly developed by Quantum Systems and WIY as part of their shared venture, Quantum WIY Industries. They are designed to intercept Russian long-range drones, particularly the Geras-4 and Geras-5 (also known as Shahed variants), which operate at high speeds and have posed significant challenges to existing Ukrainian air defenses. According to Quantum Systems, the SPYS can reach speeds of up to 480–600 km/h, operate at altitudes up to 6,000 meters, and carry warheads of up to 300 grams with an operational radius of 15–30 kilometers.
Germany's federal government is funding serial production on Ukrainian soil. Lehna stated that "thousands of units are ready for delivery this year" and that production capacity could scale to "several thousand per month." The production effort will leverage existing manufacturing infrastructure built for the earlier STRILA interceptor drone, also developed by the companies. This initiative follows years of Ukrainian experience with the STRILA platform in combat conditions.
The timing reflects Ukraine's need to counter intensified Russian drone attacks. Quantum Systems representatives noted that Ukrainian interception rates for Russian reactive drones have grown from very low levels to over 30 percent in recent months, and to over 50 percent in recent nights—though they emphasized this improvement results from multiple defensive measures, including F-16 fighter jets, various electronic warfare systems, and interceptor drones working in combination.
The SPYS agreement is part of a broader defense and security package signed between Germany and Ukraine in early October 2026, valued at more than 8.5 billion euros. Germany has also allocated more than 1 billion euros in additional assistance to Ukraine. Russia has stated that continued arms supplies to Ukraine only prolong the conflict.
Why This Matters
Germany and Ukraine are establishing domestic production of air-defense drones to counter Russian aerial operations. This signals a shift from temporary military aid to embedded defense manufacturing in Ukraine, with production scaling to thousands of units monthly. The agreement is part of an 8.5 billion euro defense package and reflects Ukraine's reported improvement in drone interception rates (30–50 percent in recent months) through combined air defense systems. Timing and scale will directly affect Ukraine's ability to defend against sustained Russian drone attacks and influence the operational tempo of the conflict.
