Riyadh airport struck by explosions amid Saudi-Houthi escalation

Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh experienced two waves of explosions on Saturday, September 19, prompting the first air-raid alerts residents have received since fighting with Yemen's Houthi rebels intensified in recent weeks. The initial alerts were issued around 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. local time, with the Saudi Civil Defense declaring danger had passed within minutes of each alert. Hours later, a second round of explosions was heard, with black smoke and flames visible rising from a fuel storage facility near King Khalid International Airport in the northeastern part of the city. Firefighters were deployed to extinguish flames from what multiple reports identified as an Aramco oil storage tank.

The incident disrupted airport operations significantly. Flight tracking data showed over 270 flights delayed with an average disruption of approximately 50 minutes, though authorities stated the airport was operating normally despite delays. No organization claimed responsibility for the attacks, and Saudi officials provided no official explanation of the incidents or their cause.

The alerts and explosions occurred amid sharply escalated tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi militants based in Yemen. The Houthis have made significant territorial gains along Yemen's Red Sea coast since early September, capturing the strategic port city of Mokha and Perim Island near the Bab al-Mandab Strait—a critical chokepoint for global oil exports. Both sides have accused each other of intensified attacks: Houthi military spokesman Yahya al-Sarea claimed Saudi Arabia conducted 300 airstrikes across Yemen in the preceding week, while Saudi officials reported increased Houthi missile and drone attacks on military and energy infrastructure. The UN Security Council condemned Houthi attacks on Saturday, noting they had affected civilian infrastructure and injured civilians, while also expressing concern over Houthi military advances that have displaced over 104,000 people.

The incident raised international concerns about oil supply stability. Saudi Aramco has already informed European customers they will not receive crude oil in the following month due to attacks on the East-West pipeline. Crude oil prices stood above $100 per barrel on Saturday. US Central Command reported that American forces have facilitated over one billion barrels of crude transit through the Strait of Hormuz in recent months while maintaining zero Iranian exports through the strait.
