A 36-year-old British woman, Leanne Gregory from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, died on October 20 while attempting to rescue her two sons from a strong ocean current during a snorkeling trip near North Bimini in the Bahamas. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Gregory was snorkeling with her husband Nathan and their two sons near the southern point of the island when a strong current swept both children away. In an attempt to rescue them, she was also swept away by the current.
Gregory was recovered from the water and transported to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where CPR was administered. She was then taken to a local clinic, where she was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts. Police confirmed that foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The Bahamas Department of Meteorology had issued warnings of near-gale conditions, moderate to large swells, and a high risk of rip currents across the Northern Bahamas on the day of the incident, though no coastal-flood or tidal warning was specifically issued for Bimini. Linty Stuart, captain of the L&A Water Taxi, and first mate Jason Saunders were credited with assisting in the rescue of the boys, with Stuart noting that large waves made the rescue difficult.
Both sons were safely rescued from the water. In a GoFundMe statement, Nathan Gregory described his wife's final moments: she held one of their boys above water while being swept away, lacking the energy to save herself after a freak wave separated her from the boat. He expressed gratitude for her heroism and described her as their family's foundation. The boys' grandmother told the media that although both children could swim, the current was too strong for them to stay afloat safely.
The family was visiting the Bahamas as part of a cruise ship excursion. The Foreign Office confirmed it was in contact with the family and providing support.
Why This Matters
A British national died during a rescue attempt in a Caribbean tourist destination amid documented weather warnings for rip currents. The incident occurred during a cruise ship excursion and highlights observable hazards (near-gale conditions, high rip-current risk issued by meteorological authorities) in the area. Both children were rescued; UK Foreign Office confirmed family support is underway. Autopsy pending to confirm cause of death.
