U.S. deploys third carrier and 9,000–10,000 troops to Middle East
The U.S. is sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and approximately 9,000–10,000 troops to the Middle East by late November, raising total naval presence to over 20,000 personnel. This marks the first three-carrier deployment to the region since April 2026, as President Trump considers escalating military strikes against Iran following the November 3 midterm elections.
Quick Facts
- Third aircraft carrier strike group deployed to Middle East
- Approximately 9,000–10,000 troops deployed aboard ships
- USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group departed San Diego
- USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group deployed
- Trump indicated possible escalation of bombing campaigns against Iran
The United States military is dispatching a third aircraft carrier strike group and thousands of additional personnel to the Middle East by late November, according to U.S. officials. The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group departed San Diego on September 27, and the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group left on September 28. The combined deployment includes approximately 9,000 to 10,000 personnel—over 7,000 sailors and around 2,000 Marines. Once arrived, this would bring the total U.S. naval presence in the region to more than 20,000 sailors and Marines, plus hundreds of aircraft.
The Theodore Roosevelt and Makin Island groups will join the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington carriers already stationed in the Middle East, along with the USS Boxer amphibious readiness group. If the George Washington remains in the region when the Theodore Roosevelt arrives, it will mark the first time since April 2026 that three carrier strike groups are simultaneously deployed to the Middle East. The previous instance of three carriers in the region occurred in April 2003, when the U.S. was preparing military operations against Iraq.
President Trump has indicated that military escalation against Iran remains under consideration. In a Time magazine interview published October 1, Trump stated it is "possible" he will increase bombing campaigns in Iran after the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, though he declined to provide strategic details. Trump also suggested that early indications point to a link between Iran and a FlyDubai co-pilot who stabbed his captain and attempted to crash an Israel-bound flight on September 30, stating "they'll be hit very hard" if the connection is confirmed. Trump had previously rejected Iran's latest ceasefire proposal, citing changed strategic circumstances.
U.S. Central Command declined to comment on specific deployment timelines, citing operational security. The Pentagon's stated rationale is to provide additional options to regional commanders should Trump authorize further military action. The Washington carrier was repositioned to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose crew had been at sea for over 260 days.
Why This Matters
The deployment increases total U.S. naval presence in the Middle East to over 20,000 personnel, with the arrival of the Theodore Roosevelt expected by late November. This coincides with President Trump's stated consideration of expanded military operations against Iran. The simultaneous presence of three carrier strike groups—if the USS George Washington remains deployed—would mark the first such concentration since April 2026. These operational changes affect regional military balance, supply chains dependent on freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz (a global oil and LNG chokepoint), and the timing of potential U.S. military decisions tied to the U.S. electoral calendar.
