Ukraine Introduces National Font Zakon to Replace Russian Typefaces in Official Documents
Ukraine has introduced Zakon, a national font developed from Ukrainian artistic traditions, designed to replace Russian-origin typefaces in official government documents. The font family comprises three variants and will be implemented gradually, beginning with testing in state institutions.
Quick Facts
- Unveiling of Zakon national font
- Font designed to replace Russian-origin typefaces in official documents
- Three font variants created: Zakon Text, Zakon Decor, Zakon Letterpress
- Gradual implementation across government institutions
- Testing phase initiated in state institutions

Ukraine's Speaker of Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk unveiled Zakon, a new national font designed for official state communications, intended to gradually replace Russian-origin typefaces including Izhitsa and Petersburg that have been used in government documents. The font was developed by Ukrainian designers based on national calligraphic traditions and incorporates the artistic legacy of six Ukrainian graphic artists and calligraphers: Heorhiy Narbut, Vasyl Krichevsky, Yakov Gnezdovsky, Robert Lisovskyi, Vasyl Khomenko, and Vasyl Chebanyky.
The Zakon family comprises three variants tailored for different official purposes. Zakon Text is designed for routine administrative documents and correspondence, Zakon Decor for ceremonial documents and awards, and Zakon Letterpress for printing original legislative acts of the Verkhovna Rada. Ukraine's Vice Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna stated that creating a national font represents "an important step toward state institutions representing Ukraine through our artistic tradition and contemporary Ukrainian design."
Implementation will proceed gradually to avoid excessive costs, with existing signage, printed documents, and materials remaining unchanged. Zakon Text is currently undergoing testing in government institutions for letters, orders, and other routine documents. Berezhna indicated that following completion of trials, the government intends to adopt regulatory acts establishing Zakon as the unified state font. Stefanchuk framed the initiative as part of Ukraine's broader effort to assert cultural independence, noting that "decolonization should extend to how Ukraine represents itself."
Why This Matters
Ukraine's adoption of a nationally-designed typeface affects the visual presentation of all official government communications, contracts, and legislative documents. The three-variant font system (Text, Decor, Letterpress) will require policy adoption and gradual implementation across state institutions; costs and administrative timelines for full rollout remain subject to regulatory approval following current testing phases.
