Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeats Texas Gov. Abbott, ends 30-year GOP control

Democratic state representative Gina Hinojosa has defeated three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott in the Texas gubernatorial election held November 3, 2026, according to projections by major U.S. media outlets. With approximately 30 percent of votes counted in preliminary tallies, Hinojosa led with 56.14 percent of the vote (1.76 million votes) compared to Abbott's 42.57 percent (1.33 million votes), a margin of 13.57 percentage points. Libertarian candidate Pat Dixon received 1.29 percent. The result marks the first time a Democrat has won the Texas governorship since 1995, ending the Republican Party's 30-year hold on the office.

Hinojosa, born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, becomes the first Hispanic governor in Texas history. She was elected to the state House in 2016 representing District 49 after working as a civil rights and labor lawyer. Education reform emerged as a central theme in her campaign, inspired by her efforts to prevent her son's elementary school from closing due to state budget cuts. She pledged that one of her first actions as governor would be to remove the state's education commissioner, citing declining student performance across Texas.

The race reflected shifting demographics and political challenges for Republicans in Texas. Hinojosa criticized Abbott over data center development, an issue that created friction with rural voters despite their historical Republican support. She also connected with Latino voters, who comprise approximately one-third of the state's electorate, through bilingual campaigning and Spanish-language town halls. Abbott's campaign outspent Hinojosa by tens of millions of dollars and attacked her on social issues, particularly transgender rights and gender-affirming care for minors. The candidates did not participate in a formal debate; Hinojosa staged a solo debate outside the Governor's Mansion in mid-October after Abbott declined debate invitations.

Had Abbott won, he would have become Texas's longest-serving governor, surpassing Rick Perry's approximately 14-year tenure. Abbott had served as governor since January 20, 2015, accumulating 11 years and 10 months in office as of October 2026. The gubernatorial result reflected broader Democratic gains nationally, with the party projected to win control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, including victories in traditionally conservative states such as South Carolina and Kansas. No Democrat had won statewide office in Texas since 1994, marking the longest drought for the party in the nation.
