North Korea launches two ballistic missiles into eastern waters

North Korea conducted two short-range ballistic missile launches from the Wonsan area on Sunday afternoon, approximately three hours apart, according to South Korea's military. The first missile traveled about 280 miles (450 kilometers) and the second more than 370 miles, both toward the North's eastern waters. Both missiles landed in the sea without striking any territory. South Korea, the United States, and Japan confirmed the launches and are conducting joint analysis of the missiles' specifications. Japan's Defense Ministry detected a suspected North Korean missile but confirmed it did not land in Japanese territorial waters.

The launches occurred days after North Korea reaffirmed its status as a nuclear-armed state and rejected a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding it halt its nuclear activities. South Korea's presidential office called on North Korea to immediately cease ballistic missile launches, which are prohibited under U.N. Security Council resolutions. North Korea's military leadership, including Kim Yo Jong (sister of leader Kim Jong Un), stated that U.S.-led military exercises in the region—including a recent joint U.S.-South Korean drill and the multilateral "Pacific Vanguard" exercise involving the U.S., South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada—represent provocative actions that worsen regional tensions.

Kim Yo Jong criticized the U.S. scaling back of joint military exercises as insufficient, stating it would not change their "provocative, aggressive nature." She claimed that regular U.S.-led military drills are the primary driver of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea asserted its commitment to intensifying nuclear deterrence capabilities in response to what it characterized as prolonged U.S. military hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region.

South Korea and the United States maintained heightened surveillance and alert postures following the launches. South Korea's military said it maintains readiness to repel any provocations from the North under its alliance with the U.S. The three-nation coalition of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan pledged close coordination of information sharing and sustained military readiness in response to North Korean weapons activity.
