Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, for a three-day state visit to the United States. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted them at the airport in a rare planeside ceremony—the first time a sitting U.S. president has personally welcomed a foreign leader at an airport since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy greeted British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. The airport reception featured a red carpet, honor guards, a 21-gun salute, national anthems, and a military flyover by B-1 bombers.

On Thursday, Xi and Peng arrived at the White House for an official state ceremony on the South Lawn, where 479 military personnel participated in a formal reception. The ceremony included a military review in the Rose Garden and concluded with a B-2 stealth bomber and four F-22 fighter jets flying overhead. The visit encompasses multiple high-profile events, including a state dinner at the White House, a museum visit, and a farewell at the National Archives.

The leaders are scheduled to discuss trade, artificial intelligence, security, Taiwan, and North Korea during their talks. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the U.S. and China have formalized a framework for bilateral AI dialogue, with officials expected to meet in two months in Shenzhen. On trade, the two countries have tentatively agreed to reduce tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of goods from each side, with the one-year trade truce set to expire on November 10 potentially extended. Trump previously visited Beijing in May 2026, and this reciprocal visit marks the first state visit by a Chinese leader to the U.S. since Xi's 2015 visit during the Obama administration.

Why This Matters

The three-day state visit signals elevated U.S.–China diplomatic engagement and involves commitments on bilateral AI dialogue framework (officials to meet in Shenzhen within two months), trade tariff reductions on $30 billion in goods, and a trade truce expiring November 10 that may be extended. The visit follows Trump's May 2026 Beijing trip and precedes ongoing negotiations on Taiwan, North Korea, and regional security that will affect policy timelines and market access across technology, manufacturing, and defense sectors.
