Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived at Joint Base Andrews near Washington on September 23, 2026, for an official three-day state visit to the United States. In a rare diplomatic gesture, President Donald Trump personally greeted Xi on the tarmac rather than waiting at the White House, departing from standard protocol. The arrival ceremony featured a 100-foot red carpet, a 21-member honor guard, military bands playing both national anthems, a gun salute, and a flyover by two B-1 bomber aircraft. Trump's wife Melania and Xi's wife Peng Liyuan attended the ceremony.
The visit marks a historic milestone in U.S.-China relations, coming six months after Trump's May visit to China—where Vice President Han Zheng, rather than Xi, greeted Trump at Beijing's airport. Trump emphasized the importance of the relationship and described Xi as a "great leader" and friend. In a written speech upon arrival, Xi stated that China and the United States should be partners, not rivals, and that "the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand." He called for a relationship featuring "cooperation as the mainstay, moderate competition, manageable differences, and promises of peace."
The three-day visit is scheduled to include formal ceremonies, a white-tie state dinner at the White House on Thursday featuring technology industry leaders, and closed-door discussions on major bilateral issues. Key topics expected to be discussed include trade, artificial intelligence, Iran, Taiwan, and broader strategic stability between the two superpowers. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun described the reciprocal visits within six months as marking "a historic milestone" in head-of-state diplomacy, which plays an irreplaceable role in guiding China-U.S. relations.
The visit has drawn mixed reactions domestically. While Trump has lavished praise on Xi and orchestrated an elaborate welcome, some American officials have expressed concerns. Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticized the "lavish welcome," arguing that Trump should not have invited Xi "based on all of the troubling issues we have with President Xi and the Chinese Communist Party." Wicker suggested topics including China's military buildup, support for Iran, and military capabilities aimed at the United States.
Xi's entourage includes his wife Peng Liyuan, Cai Qi (a Standing Committee member of the Communist Party's Political Bureau), and Wang Yi (foreign minister). The visit follows decades of Xi's personal connection to the United States, including a 1985 visit to Iowa as a local official studying agriculture, where he developed a friendship with then-governor Terry Branstad, who later served as U.S. ambassador to China under Trump.
Why This Matters
Xi's three-day visit to Washington—marked by Trump's planeside greeting rather than standard White House protocol—creates a formal bilateral engagement channel on trade, AI governance, Iran policy coordination, and Taiwan status. Both sides have signaled willingness to frame the relationship as cooperative rather than zero-sum; measurable outcomes (trade deal frameworks, AI safety accords, or strategic stability commitments) or lack thereof will affect market expectations, tech sector regulation coordination, and regional military posture assessments in East Asia. The visit also occurs amid domestic U.S. debate over engagement depth, with Senate committee chairs publicly questioning the diplomatic warmth.
