US and China agree to cut tariffs on $30 billion in goods
The US and China agreed to reciprocal tariff reductions on $30 billion in goods during Xi Jinping's Washington summit with President Trump, marking a significant de-escalation in their ongoing trade conflict. The agreement covers non-sensitive goods on both sides and will be implemented through the newly established U.S.-China Board of Trade.
Quick Facts
- Reciprocal tariff reduction agreement on $30 billion in goods
- Three-day summit in Washington
- Establishment of U.S.-China Board of Trade
- Extension of Busan Agreement to January 10, 2027
- Creation of China-U.S. artificial intelligence dialogue

The United States and China have agreed to reduce tariffs reciprocally on $30 billion in goods following a three-day summit in Washington between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held September 23–25, 2026. The deal applies to non-sensitive goods and marks a significant de-escalation in the trade conflict that began in February 2025.
U.S. exports receiving favorable Chinese tariff treatment include agricultural products, fish and seafood, logs and wood products, cosmetics, and medical devices. Chinese-made goods receiving preferential U.S. tariff rates include small appliances, toys, holiday decorations, and children's car seats. The specific tariff rates and complete product lists have not yet been released; U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated additional details would be announced on Monday following the summit.
The agreement was negotiated through the U.S.-China Board of Trade, formally established during Xi's Washington visit this week following its initial proposal during Trump's visit to China in May 2026. This board will oversee future tariff negotiations and dispute resolution between the two countries.
The deal represents a cooling point in escalating trade tensions. U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods peaked at 145% in April 2025, while China's tariffs on U.S. goods reached 125%. A 90-day truce agreed in Geneva in May 2025 reduced U.S. tariffs to 30% and China's to 10%, extended for another 90 days in August. An October 2025 agreement in South Korea saw China pledge to crack down on fentanyl precursors, resume soybean purchases, and ease rare-earth export restrictions, while the U.S. further reduced tariffs.
Beyond trade, the two countries also extended the bilateral trade truce known as the Busan Agreement through January 10, 2027, and established a China-U.S. dialogue on artificial intelligence to discuss risks and benefits. Xi announced during the summit that two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, would be transferred to the Atlanta Zoo as a goodwill gesture.
Why This Matters
The agreement reduces tariffs on $30 billion in bilateral trade and extends the Busan truce through January 10, 2027. U.S. exporters gain access to Chinese markets for agricultural products, seafood, and medical devices; Chinese manufacturers receive preferential rates on consumer goods and appliances sold to the U.S. This follows escalation from peak tariffs of 145% (U.S.) and 125% (China) in spring 2025. The newly established U.S.-China Board of Trade will manage future negotiations and disputes. Observable effects include implementation timelines for tariff adjustments and monitoring of the extended truce framework.
