Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States on September 23, 2026, for a state visit and called for China and the U.S. to be partners rather than rivals. In a written speech delivered upon his arrival at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, Xi expressed confidence that the two major countries could find the right way to get along in a new era.

Xi outlined a framework for bilateral relations based on cooperation as the mainstay, moderate competition, manageable differences, and promises of peace. He emphasized that the interests of the Chinese and American peoples are deeply intertwined and noted that China's vision for national rejuvenation and President Donald Trump's concept of making America great again "can go hand in hand, complement each other and benefit the world."

Xi stated that both countries need to work in the same direction and take steps toward peaceful coexistence. He referenced an agreement reached with Trump during the latter's visit to China in May 2026 to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability, which he said had provided guidance for the future development of bilateral ties. Xi indicated he hoped to have in-depth exchanges with Trump on key bilateral and global issues and to expand opportunities for cooperation between the two nations across all areas.

The visit comes during what Xi described as a crucial year for the respective development of both countries. Trump personally welcomed Xi and his wife Melania at Andrews Air Force Base. Bilateral talks between the two leaders were expected to begin on September 24, with the state visit scheduled to conclude on September 25.
