Kane Favored for 2026 Ballon d'Or Against Mbappé and Yamal in London

Harry Kane leads betting odds to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or, announced at the London Palladium on 26 October at 20:00 GMT. The England captain amassed 73 goals in 65 games for club and country last season while winning the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, establishing himself as the clear frontrunner. However, semi-final exits in both the Champions League and World Cup have introduced uncertainty into the race.

Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal remain strong challengers. Mbappé, 27, achieved individual milestones including top scorer in La Liga, the Champions League, and the World Cup—becoming the all-time leading World Cup goalscorer with 22 total goals. Yamal, the 19-year-old Barcelona star, won the World Cup and La Liga with his respective teams, though he finished second in the 2025 Ballon d'Or and was outshone by teammates Rodri (Player of the Tournament) and Pau Cubarsi (Young Player) at the World Cup. Lionel Messi, at age 39, remains on the shortlist after inspiring Argentina to the World Cup final.

Mbappé will attend the ceremony in London; sources report he stated "There wasn't anyone better than me last season." Yamal has asserted, "I would deserve it this year because of what I've won," while Mbappé said, "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history...is something that really stands out. Who am I voting for? Myself."

The voting mechanism involves 100 FIFA-affiliated journalists from the sport's top-ranked nations, each casting votes for their top 10 players from a 30-person shortlist, allocating 1 to 15 points per vote. In the women's award, Barcelona midfielder Alexia Putellas is favored to win for a third time, with Poland's Ewa Pajor as main challenger. The ceremony will be held in London for the first time, selected in honor of inaugural winner Stanley Matthews in 1956.

Kane, now 33, would become the first English male winner since Michael Owen in 2001 if victorious. The award carries no cash prize but can generate significant commercial bonuses and enhance marketing value for winners.
