Houthis seize Bab al-Mandeb Strait; Trump declines Saudi strikes

The Iran-backed Houthis have seized control of strategically important islands and thousands of square kilometers of territory along Yemen's Red Sea coast in recent days, tightening their grip on the Bab al-Mandeb Strait—a critical chokepoint for global shipping and energy supplies. The seizure has intensified regional tensions and raised concerns about disruptions to two of the world's most important shipping routes, the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea corridor.

U.S. officials met with Houthi representatives at the U.S. Embassy in Muscat, Oman, over the weekend to discuss the escalating situation. During the talks, the Houthis assured the U.S. that they had no intention of attacking American shipping in the Red Sea and reaffirmed their commitment to a ceasefire established the previous year, in which the group agreed not to strike U.S. targets. The Houthis indicated their restrictions would apply only to vessels linked to Saudi Arabia.

Despite pressure from Saudi Arabia, the Trump administration has declined to launch direct military strikes against the Houthis. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called President Trump twice last week requesting U.S. strikes, but the requests were rebuffed. Trump stated that the U.S. views this as a regional security challenge and expects Saudi Arabia to take the lead in response. The president also told reporters in Ireland that the Houthis had "called us and they don't want to fight with us" and said his administration has no immediate plans for "offensive strikes." Trump offered reassurance to the crown prince, describing him as "a good friend" and pledging that "everything will work out very well," though he provided no specific military commitments.

U.S. officials have indicated that providing intelligence and targeting support to Saudi Arabia—rather than direct American military intervention—represents the extent of U.S. involvement. Analysts note that U.S. military resources are reportedly depleted by ongoing operations and that domestic opposition to the Iran war has limited Washington's willingness to open another military front. The Houthis' assurances regarding U.S. shipping, however, remain subject to scrutiny given the group's history of attacking commercial vessels and its close ties to Iran.

The situation reflects broader geopolitical tensions in the region. Iran maintains control of the Strait of Hormuz, and Saudi Arabia had rerouted much of its oil exports through the Red Sea to circumvent that chokepoint—a strategy now threatened by Houthi control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Rising oil prices from shipping disruptions could create political challenges for Trump ahead of November midterm elections. Israel has reportedly offered to intervene on Saudi Arabia's behalf, though analysts say Israeli involvement would likely be limited due to domestic political pressures and concerns about Arab world legitimacy.
