Poland warns Russia plans 'accidental' drone strikes on NATO allies

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned Thursday that Russia is planning hybrid drone and missile strikes against NATO members supporting Ukraine, which Moscow may attempt to frame as accidents to undermine collective defense commitments. Tusk cited intelligence assessments from NATO, Ukraine, and U.S. agencies, describing them as "very consistent and convincing." He emphasized that Russia's objective is to paralyze NATO's response and convince member states that Article 5—the mutual defense provision—is "more theoretical than practical," betting that Western allies will hesitate to respond to what appear as isolated incidents rather than declared acts of war.

Tusk's warning, delivered to Polish parliament on Thursday, came after a series of recent incidents along NATO's eastern flank. On Sunday, a Russian drone struck a passenger train in Ukraine just over a mile from the Polish border. On Monday, Polish military retrieved a Russian drone off the northwestern coast carrying a warhead. On Tuesday, NATO jets shot down a drone in Lithuania. Tusk noted that Russia is also deploying jet-powered drones at scale—a new weapon type traveling at high speeds and high altitude before striking targets, which few NATO members are equipped to counter effectively.

Tusk stressed that while "there is nothing to suggest an invasion," Poland would "face provocations far more dangerous than those we have faced so far" in the coming months, particularly through late autumn and winter—what intelligence services assess as the most critical phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war. He also warned of Russian plans to destroy Ukrainian energy infrastructure and logistics, noting that attacks increasingly target installations near Poland's border crossings with Ukraine. He announced plans to visit Ukraine to discuss cooperation within an anti-ballistic coalition.

Across Europe, governments are preparing for intensified threats. Germany is readying hospitals for potential conflict, Lithuania has updated evacuation plans, and NATO troops are conducting exercises in the Baltic region. Earlier in September, Germany officially blamed Russia after a drone carrying explosives was found at Leipzig/Halle airport, a major NATO hub that has hosted Ukrainian cargo operations. Tusk also warned that political shifts within Europe—including the rise of Russia-friendly political parties—are undermining NATO's commitment to Ukraine, and appealed to lawmakers to speak with one voice on security matters.

Russia's Foreign Ministry has denied the accusations, calling them "contrived" and "far-fetched." However, Tusk's warning reflects broader Western intelligence assessments about Russian hybrid operations designed to test NATO's unity and resolve without triggering a formal military response.
