The Buffalo Bills celebrated the opening of their new Highmark Stadium with a dominant 41-31 victory over the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. Built at a cost of $2.2 billion next to the team's previous home, the stadium hosted its inaugural regular-season game in Orchard Park, New York, with quarterback Josh Allen delivering a historic performance. Allen completed 20 of 31 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns while rushing 14 times for 69 yards and two additional scores—accounting for five total touchdowns in the game.
Allen's five-touchdown performance marked his fourth career game with at least three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. He shares this distinction with Hall of Famer Kordell Stewart as the only two players in NFL history with multiple such games. However, USA Today reports this was Allen's 10th career game with multiple passing and rushing touchdowns, the most in NFL history, with legendary 49ers quarterback Steve Young second with four. The Bills dominated the first half, scoring touchdowns on their opening four possessions to build a commanding 27-7 lead by early in the second quarter. Buffalo accumulated 446 total yards, 34 first downs, 203 rushing yards, converted 9 of 12 third downs, and achieved a perfect 5-for-5 record in the red zone.
Running back James Cook contributed significantly to Buffalo's ground attack, rushing 21 times for 135 yards and one touchdown, including 101 yards in the first half alone. Wide receiver Joshua Palmer caught a 43-yard touchdown pass on a busted Lions coverage, and Dalton Kincaid also scored for the Bills. The Bills' defense recorded four sacks, including two from Gregory Rousseau, with defensive tackle Deone Walker stepping into an expanded role after Ed Oliver was scratched before the game and registering seven total quarterback pressures.
The Detroit Lions, playing without starting offensive linemen Christian Mahogany and Blake Miller due to injury, struggled early but mounted a second-half comeback. Quarterback Jared Goff finished 26 of 38 for 327 yards and four touchdowns, though he was sacked twice and fumbled twice in the opening quarter. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown led Detroit's recovery with 142 receiving yards on nine catches and two touchdowns, including a 27-yard score with 1:42 remaining. Sam LaPorta also scored for the Lions, and running back Jahmyr Gibbs caught an 11-yard touchdown. Despite Detroit's efforts to cut the deficit, the Lions never got closer than 10 points after halftime.
The game marked the Bills' second consecutive victory after a 36-31 Week 1 win over the Houston Texans, improving their record to 2-0. The Lions, who defeated the New Orleans Saints in overtime in Week 1, fell to 1-1. Prior to kickoff, both American and Canadian national anthems were played in Buffalo, with Canadian band Barenaked Ladies performing the latter as the Bills honored their Canadian fans.

Why This Matters
The $2.2 billion Highmark Stadium's inaugural regular-season game establishes Buffalo's new home venue and marks a major infrastructure asset transition. Allen's five-touchdown performance sets NFL benchmarks (10th career game with multiple passing and rushing touchdowns, most in history) that affect franchise records, statistical eligibility for awards voting, and team momentum entering Week 2. The Bills' 2-0 start and Lions' 1-1 record materially affect divisional playoff positioning and playoff probability metrics at season's quarter-mark.
