- Tree log released under tension and trapped both legs
- Colleague cut through log with chainsaw to free worker
- Rescue operation by two fire brigades
- Airlifted to trauma hospital

A 34-year-old forestry worker from the St. Veit an der Glan district in Carinthia, Austria was trapped between two tree logs on Tuesday afternoon while cutting a spruce trunk in a forest between Althofen and Guttaring. As he was shortening the log, the trunk—which was under tension—released suddenly and clamped both of his legs. The worker immediately alerted his colleague, who responded quickly and used a chainsaw to cut through the log, freeing him from the trap. Due to the severity of his injuries, including a broken leg, the worker required rescue by firefighters from both Althofen and Guttaring to be extracted from the difficult terrain. He was subsequently airlifted by rescue helicopter C11 to the Unfallkrankenhaus (trauma hospital) in Klagenfurt for emergency treatment.
Why This Matters
Forestry remains a high-risk occupation; this incident illustrates both the hazards of timber-cutting operations under tension and the response protocols—peer-to-peer rescue plus coordinated firefighter and helicopter evacuation—that determine survival and injury severity outcomes in remote Alpine terrain.
