Ukrainian drones disable two major Yandex data centers in Russia
Ukrainian drones struck two major Yandex data centers in Russia on October 8–9, 2026, disabling critical infrastructure at the Russian tech giant and disrupting services including search, AI chatbots, and apps used by tens of millions. Ukrainian officials described the attacks as a symmetric response to weeks of Russian strikes on Ukrainian digital infrastructure.
Quick Facts
- Ukrainian drones struck Yandex data center in Sasovo, Ryazan region
- Ukrainian drones struck Yandex data center in Kaluga region
- Multiple modules completely disabled at Kaluga facility
- Operations completely suspended at Sasovo facility
- Service disruptions across Yandex platforms including search engine and AI chatbot

Ukrainian drone forces struck two Yandex data centers in Russia on October 8–9, 2026, substantially disrupting operations at the Russian tech giant's critical infrastructure. The first attack on October 8 hit the Sasovo facility in the Ryazan region, forcing a complete suspension of operations at that site. The second strike on October 9 targeted the Kaluga region data center, Yandex's largest facility, completely disabling several modules. The Kaluga center, located in the Grabtsevo industrial park, covers 130,000 square meters with a designed power capacity of 63 megawatts and can accommodate more than 3,800 server racks.
Yandex confirmed service disruptions across multiple platforms, including temporary unavailability of its AI chatbot functions, disruptions to its search engine, and problems affecting food-ordering and taxi apps used by tens of millions of Russians. The company stated that no employees were injured. Yandex acknowledged the attacks had struck at the core of its operations and that its data centers were critical for normal service function. The Sasovo facility houses two of three supercomputers used to develop Yandex's YandexGPT AI model.
Ukrainian officials confirmed responsibility for the strikes. Ukrainian defense company Fire Point stated that its FP-1 drones were involved in the Kaluga attack. President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized the strikes as a symmetric response to weeks of Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian data centers and digital infrastructure that began in mid-September. He stated: "We always respond in mirror-like fashion" and "We continue to respond to Russia's attacks on Ukraine, and we're doing so with high precision."
Russia had conducted a sustained campaign against Ukrainian digital infrastructure since mid-September, striking data centers in Kyiv and elsewhere that reportedly affected approximately 100,000 households with internet outages. Moscow has justified such attacks by claiming the facilities support Ukrainian military intelligence, while Ukraine characterizes them as targeting civilian infrastructure.
The October 8–9 strikes coincided with broader Ukrainian attacks on Russian military and industrial targets, including facilities involved in missile production and rocket fuel manufacturing. Both Russia and Ukraine have expanded drone attacks on economic targets during the conflict, targeting energy facilities, refineries, and infrastructure supporting military operations.
Why This Matters
Yandex operates critical digital infrastructure serving tens of millions of Russian users across search, AI, fintech, and mobility services. Disruptions to these platforms directly affect consumer and business access to information, payments, and transportation in Russia. Both Russia and Ukraine have expanded drone strikes targeting data centers and energy infrastructure since mid-September 2026, establishing a cycle of cross-border attacks on civilian-facing digital and economic assets. The strikes demonstrate how modern conflicts increasingly target dual-use infrastructure with measurable civilian impact, including internet outages and service interruptions.
