Saudi Arabia postpones investment summit to 2027 after Houthi attacks
Saudi Arabia postponed its flagship Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference from October 2026 to 2027, citing the need to maintain event quality amid multiple Houthi attacks on the kingdom. The decision comes as Riyadh implements remote work policies and air defence alerts escalate following strikes on the airport and military targets.

Saudi Arabia announced on October 19 the postponement of the 10th Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference from October 26–29, 2026 to 2027, citing the need to maintain the event's scale, quality, and impact. The decision follows a series of attacks by Houthi forces from Yemen on Saudi infrastructure in recent weeks.
The FII, known as the "Davos of the desert," is one of the kingdom's premier platforms for presenting economic diversification efforts to international investors. The conference typically brings together heads of state and executives from major banks, asset managers, and energy companies. Scheduled speakers and participants were expected to include BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon. Future Investment Initiative Institute CEO Maha bint Mishari Al Saud stated that all existing registrations and partnerships will remain valid, with new dates to be announced soon.
The postponement reflects heightened security concerns across Riyadh. King Khalid International Airport has been closed since October 10 following a missile attack that killed 13 people and wounded more than 300. On October 19, residents of Riyadh and the neighbouring Al Kharj region received air defence alerts warning of a potential aerial threat, though the alert was later suspended. Saudi government organizations in Riyadh adopted remote work policies starting October 19, with some agencies in the Al Olaya and King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) instructing staff to work from home.
The Houthis, a Yemen-based militia, have claimed responsibility for multiple recent attacks on Saudi targets. On October 18, the group launched three ballistic missiles at a military training camp in Yemen's Shabwa province, resulting in at least 53 deaths and over 200 wounded among government-aligned forces, according to local authorities. Saudi Arabia has also postponed or cancelled other international events, including a summit with European Union leaders. The United States and United Kingdom have issued travel advisories recommending their citizens avoid travel to Saudi Arabia.
Why This Matters
Postponement of Saudi Arabia's flagship investment conference disrupts the kingdom's international investor outreach and signals elevated security constraints on large gatherings. The closure of King Khalid International Airport (closed since October 10 following a missile strike that killed 13 and wounded over 300), coupled with air defence alerts and remote work orders for government agencies, measurably restricts business operations, travel, and economic activity. The US and UK travel advisories against Saudi Arabia may further deter international participation and investment-related travel, affecting bilateral business relations and the kingdom's diversification marketing efforts.
