Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel requests registration cancellation at 15

JJ Gabriel, a 15-year-old striker in Manchester United's academy, has formally requested the immediate cancellation of his registration with the club, potentially making him a free agent. The request was submitted on 15 September 2026, one day before Gabriel was expected to potentially make his competitive debut in the Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton on 17 September.

Gabriel joined Manchester United at age 11 and has emerged as one of the club's most promising young talents. During the 2025–26 season at age 14, he won both the Premier League Under-18 player of the year award and Manchester United's Under-18 player of the year award. Last season, he scored 26 goals in 29 appearances across youth levels and became the youngest winner of United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award. More recently, he scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah and has made two Premier League 2 appearances this season with two goals and two assists.

The precise reasons for Gabriel's request remain unclear. However, sources indicate tensions exist between Gabriel's family and the club. Gabriel did not train with the first-team squad at the end of the previous week, and he removed all Manchester United-related content from his Instagram account several days before the formal request. Manchester United's chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are directly involved in discussions with Gabriel's family. The club has stated it is unsure what prompted the decision and believes it has offered Gabriel and his family a clear pathway to the senior team, including meetings with former head coach Ruben Amorim and club legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Under Premier League rules, a youth registration can only be cancelled if the club, player, and parent or carer agree; if agreement cannot be reached, the Premier League can make a binding decision. Gabriel's current contract runs to the end of the 2026–27 season, and the club has indicated it can challenge the cancellation request. Gabriel cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17 in October 2027, though he will be eligible to sign a scholarship agreement when he turns 16 on 6 October 2026. Manchester United has stated it does not consider the situation irretrievable and remains hopeful of resolving it.
