Three NASA astronauts vote from International Space Station during U.S. midterms

Three NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station cast their votes in the U.S. midterm elections on November 3, 2026, using an electronic voting system designed for remote voters. Astronaut Anil Menon demonstrated the process in a video, explaining how his sleeping compartment on the ISS served as a voting booth. Using a computer in his quarters, Menon completed an electronic ballot form and transmitted it to Harris County, Texas—the location of NASA's Johnson Space Center—where his vote was counted.

The voting process relies on an established legal framework dating to 1997, when the Texas legislature passed legislation enabling NASA astronauts in Earth orbit to participate in U.S. elections. Astronauts first register using the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) to request absentee ballots, a system also available to overseas Americans and other absent citizens. Once completed, the electronic ballot is encrypted for security and transmitted via NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System to a ground antenna at a NASA test facility. The ballot is then routed to NASA's Johnson Space Center Mission Control in Houston, which forwards it to the relevant county clerk for processing.

Joining Menon in casting votes from orbit were astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, both of whom arrived at the ISS in recent weeks via SpaceX. The voting system employs encryption protocols ensuring that only the individual astronaut and the county clerk can access the ballot, maintaining voter privacy throughout transmission from space. This milestone reflects the growing feasibility of remote voting infrastructure and the practical accommodation of spacefaring citizens in democratic processes.

The 2026 midterm voting from space continues a precedent established nearly three decades ago. Astronaut David Wolf became the first American to vote from space in 1997 while stationed on Russia's Mir space station. Wolf later described the experience as meaningful, noting the solitude of voting alone in orbit while remaining connected to his home country's electoral process.
