US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that Iran has reached out directly to Washington seeking a peace deal, describing the conflict as nearing its end. Speaking to reporters in North Carolina, Trump said: "They want to make a deal. We'll see how that works out." When asked whether he had heard from Iran directly or through intermediaries, Trump confirmed direct contact. He predicted the war could end before or shortly after the November midterm elections, though he suggested an earlier resolution was possible.
The US-Iran conflict began on February 28, 2026, with large-scale attacks by the US and Israel targeting Iranian military and government infrastructure. In June 2026, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, on July 8, the US resumed large-scale strikes against Iran, accusing Tehran of violating the terms regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The US administration subsequently shifted toward economic pressure through sanctions rather than continued military operations.
Tehran has not publicly confirmed direct negotiations with Washington. Senior Iranian officials have rejected dialogue unless Washington honours the terms of the June agreement. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, accused Trump of sending "mixed signals" and stated that "no talks until Iran's conditions are met." Former Iranian diplomat Abbas Khameyar dismissed Trump's claims of direct contact, stating that Iran's diplomatic activity remains centred on securing enforcement of the existing Memorandum of Understanding rather than opening new negotiations.
The conflict has expanded into Yemen, where Iran-backed Houthi forces have damaged Saudi oil installations and announced a blockade of Red Sea shipping. The Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20-25% of global oil trade and about 20% of liquefied natural gas pass, remains effectively closed by Iranian actions. Oil prices have exceeded $100 per barrel as global energy supplies face pressure. International mediation efforts, traditionally conducted through intermediaries including Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman, continue alongside Trump's claims of direct communication.
Why This Matters
Direct US-Iran peace negotiations, if confirmed, could alter the timeline and terms of energy market stabilization; the Strait of Hormuz closure affects 20–25% of global oil trade and 20% of LNG supply, with prices exceeding $100/barrel. Verification of direct contact and Iran's actual negotiating posture will determine whether mediation through Qatar, Pakistan, or Oman remains the operative channel, and whether the June 2026 memorandum of understanding remains the baseline or is superseded. Election timing (November midterms) adds domestic political variables to any ceasefire announcement.
