Real Madrid travelled to Estadio Martínez Valero on September 15, 2026, to face Elche in a La Liga matchday 6 fixture. Madrid, managed by José Mourinho, held 12 points and second place in the table, one point behind Barcelona. Elche, coached by Martín Anselmi, remained winless after five rounds with only two points from draws, occupying the penultimate position.
Mourinho made five substitutions from recent matches, resting Jude Bellingham and fielding a lineup including Vinicius, Mbappé, Diomandé, Arda Güler, Cucurella, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Huijsen. Aurélien Tchouaméni started for the first time this season after recovering from injury. Federico Valverde and Tchouaméni formed the midfield pivot. Anselmi fielded a defensive eleven without Fer Niño and Lemar in the starting XI, including players such as Dituro in goal, Sangaré, Redondo, Chust in defence, and Osorio in attack.
Anselmi stated his tactical philosophy ahead of the match: "The best way to defend is to have the ball. We must maintain the same defensive competitiveness from San Mamés and defend ourselves with possession." He emphasized avoiding lapses of concentration against Madrid's quality. Madrid's recent form included victories over Mallorca (4–0), Real Sociedad (4–1), and Rayo Vallecano (4–1), along with a Champions League match against Inter and a loss to Betis (0–1). Elche had drawn 1–1 away to Athletic Club on the preceding Saturday and had not defeated Madrid in their last 16 La Liga encounters.
Betting analysts favored Madrid to win comfortably, with Madrid at 1.20 odds, a draw at 7.40, and Elche at 12.00. Over 2.5 goals was listed at 1.32 odds. Madrid had created 20 clear chances on 8.76 expected goals in their three previous matches, while Elche had conceded 23 clear chances on 11.16 xG over five rounds—the worst defensive metric in La Liga. The match was broadcast live on Movistar Plus and Movistar LaLiga in Spain, beginning at 9:30 p.m. local time.

Why This Matters
Real Madrid, currently second with 12 points (one behind Barcelona), seek a third consecutive win that would strengthen their title position at the season's midpoint. Elche remain winless after five matches with only two points and occupy the penultimate league position; a loss would extend their drought and increase relegation pressure. Mourinho's rotation strategy and Tchouaméni's first-match return from injury signal Madrid's squad depth management, while Elche's worst-in-league defensive metrics (11.16 xG conceded over five rounds) represent measurable tactical vulnerability against Madrid's recent 4–goal-per-match scoring form.
