Russia and Ukraine Exchange Strikes; At Least Ten Dead

Russian and Ukrainian forces exchanged strikes on Saturday, September 26, killing at least ten people across multiple regions as aerial warfare intensified. Russia launched 173 attack drones at Ukraine overnight, with Ukrainian air defense reporting that 134 drones were shot down or neutralized by 7:30 a.m. Strikes were recorded across 19 locations, including the capital Kyiv and regions in southern and northern Ukraine.

Casualties from Russian attacks were reported across several regions. In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, two women died after being trapped under rubble from their destroyed home, with seven others injured. The Sumy region reported two people killed and ten wounded in separate attacks. In Kyiv, Russian drone strikes injured five people overnight and damaged residential and office buildings across multiple districts. Additional casualties were reported in Donetsk (two killed, eight injured), Kherson Oblast (one killed, three injured), and the Kyiv region (two injured). Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that its attack on Kyiv damaged a data center supporting mobile internet and Starlink satellite communications.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for stronger international responses to Russia's escalation. "It is essential that our partners not forget: Russia is escalating every single day," he stated on Saturday morning. "If the Russians have chosen to make their strikes even more brutal, the world must choose stronger responses to keep the war from spreading further." He cited "numerous strikes on residential homes" in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reported that Russia had carried out a "double strike" attack on a logistics facility serving fast-food chain McDonald's, describing the attacks as disrupting daily life and threatening investment.

Ukraine responded with its own offensive operations, continuing a campaign to target Russian energy infrastructure and military logistics. A Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's southern Krasnodar region killed three people and wounded two, with fires reported at two industrial sites; Russian media later reported an oil refinery was targeted. Ukrainian forces also reported striking a logistics facility in the neighboring Rostov region supplying Russian military operations. These attacks reflected Ukraine's expanding long-range strike capability, which officials said now extends to the Urals and Siberia.

The exchanges occurred amid rising tensions across Eastern Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Saturday in Saint Petersburg that Moscow was not preparing for conflict with Europe, despite increasing reports of suspected Russian hybrid attacks in the Baltic states. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have reported growing numbers of drone incursions in recent months. Meanwhile, Ukrainian leadership continued diplomatic appeals: earlier in the week, Zelenskyy called on the United Nations for countries to impose sanctions and trade restrictions to deprive Russia of revenue needed to sustain the war.
