A Russian Mi-8 helicopter briefly entered Polish airspace near Braniewo on 23 September, penetrating approximately 300 metres into Polish territory for 42 seconds. A Russian Mi-8 military helicopter entered Polish airspace near Braniewo on 23 September 2026 at 11:08 local time, remaining for approximately 42 seconds before departing. The aircraft, originating from Russia's Kaliningrad exclave, penetrated Polish territory to a depth of about 300 metres. Polish radar systems tracked the helicopter continuously throughout the incident.

In response, Poland's military scrambled fighter jets and placed ground forces on high alert. The Operational Command of Poland's Armed Forces stated that "the nature of the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defence." Polish air defence units maintain round-the-clock surveillance of Polish airspace, the command added.

This incident follows a pattern of Russian aircraft activity near NATO's eastern flank. On 22 September, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that Polish fighter jets had intercepted a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft approximately 40 kilometres from Polish coastal territory. The Operational Command reported that interceptions of Russian aircraft along NATO's eastern flank have increased by more than 250 percent in recent months.

Polish and European NATO officials have expressed concern about increased Russian provocations. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that "in recent weeks, the Russian hybrid threat against Europeans has intensified," with the intent to intimidate and undermine support for Ukraine. He suggested that Russia may be preparing drone and missile strikes against Poland and other NATO members on the eastern flank. Moscow has denied such intentions, with Russian President Vladimir Putin stating repeatedly that Moscow does not plan to attack NATO states. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov countered that Europe was preparing for war and warned of severe consequences if Europe attacks Russia.

The incident occurs amid broader military tensions in the region. Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, multiple Russian drones and missiles have landed in Polish territory. In late July, a Russian Kh-101 missile fell in Poland's Lublin Voivodeship, creating a 10-metre crater. Polish officials have called for NATO authorization to shoot down Russian aircraft and missiles while they remain in Ukrainian airspace to prevent fragments from entering NATO territory.

Why This Matters

Airspace incursions into NATO territory create operational planning cycles: Poland must maintain continuous radar and fighter readiness against potential future penetrations; NATO members assess whether collective defence obligations apply to brief intrusions; Russia's pattern of aircraft activity (250% increase in interceptions reported) affects military resource allocation and rules of engagement for allied air defence. The incident follows missile and drone impacts in Polish territory, complicating civilian and military risk assessment near the Poland–Ukraine border.
