Russian Mi-8 helicopter breaches Polish airspace for 42 seconds near Kaliningrad

A Russian Mi-8 military helicopter entered Polish airspace near the city of Braniewo on 23 September 2026 at 11:08 local time, remaining for approximately 42 seconds before departing. The aircraft, originating from Russia's Kaliningrad exclave, penetrated Polish territory to a depth of about 300 metres. Polish radar systems tracked the helicopter throughout the incident, prompting the Polish military to scramble fighter jets while ground forces were placed on high alert.

The Polish Operational Command of the Armed Forces characterized the incident as another test of Poland's air defence readiness. In an official statement, the command noted that "the nature of the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defence" and stressed that air defence crews maintain round-the-clock surveillance of Polish airspace. The military stated that all personnel and systems remained in constant readiness to ensure airspace security.

This incident occurs within a broader pattern of alleged Russian provocations near NATO's eastern border. In recent weeks, Polish officials have reported increased interceptions of Russian aircraft along the NATO frontier, with Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stating that interceptions have increased by more than 250 percent. On 22 September, Polish forces intercepted a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft approximately 40 kilometres from Polish territory.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has characterized recent Russian actions as an escalating "hybrid threat" aimed at intimidating NATO members and testing their commitment to supporting Ukraine. On 13 September, following attacks by Russian drones near the Polish-Ukrainian border, Tusk warned that "the next weeks and months may be a period of very intense actions" by Russia and stated that escalation extending to Polish territory cannot be ruled out. The Polish government has also reported other incidents, including a Russian Х-101 missile that landed in Polish territory on 30 July 2026, manufactured in the second quarter of 2026 according to Polish prosecutors.

Russia has not immediately commented on the helicopter incident. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that Moscow does not plan to attack NATO states. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this month that Europe is constantly discussing preparation for war and warned that if Europe attacks Russia, "it will be a completely different war [from that in Ukraine], and it will be very short."

The incident also coincided with NATO air activity on the same morning, as fighter jets were scrambled in response to Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory. Polish residents in the Lublin region received civil alert notifications, and operations at Lublin and Rzeszów airports were temporarily suspended during the heightened alert period.
