President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that the United States and Russia are close to reaching a major agreement on Ukraine that could extend to broader European security arrangements. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the proposed deal would be "a big, beautiful agreement" involving "more than Ukraine" and potentially "all of Europe," though he declined to specify details of the discussions.
The remarks followed Trump's unscheduled meeting with Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy and head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund. The encounter took place during a White House event hosted by First Lady Melania Trump, which honored her role in facilitating a six-day ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky that enabled hundreds of civilians to evacuate. Ukrainian officials, including Davyd Arakhamia of President Zelenskyy's parliamentary faction and human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, also attended the ceremony but Trump did not meet with them.
Russian envoy Dmitriev praised Melania Trump's "distinguished humanitarian role" in securing the Oleshky truce and stated that Russian President Putin personally authorized the operation. Ukrainian representatives at the event thanked the first lady and encouraged continued de-escalation efforts.
Trump's comments on a potential broader agreement occur amid ongoing diplomatic efforts. Separately on Thursday, Trump's son-in-law and US envoy Jared Kushner held talks in Brussels with Ukrainian, NATO, and European officials to discuss "security guarantees for Ukraine and a broader European security architecture." Both sides face continuing military operations involving air and drone strikes, while remaining divided over key issues including territorial control and security arrangements.
Planned talks involving US-mediated negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian representatives are scheduled for November 10–11 in Abu Dhabi. Trump has previously claimed he could end the war quickly, stating during his 2024 campaign that he would resolve the conflict in one day if elected.
Why This Matters
Trump's announcement of ongoing US-Russia negotiations on Ukraine signals a shift in diplomatic engagement, with talks scheduled in Abu Dhabi on November 10–11 between US-mediated Russian and Ukrainian representatives. The stated scope—potentially covering broader European security architecture—could affect NATO, European defense commitments, and territorial arrangements. Ukrainian and European officials are pursuing parallel discussions on security guarantees through Jared Kushner in Brussels. Military operations continue; resolution timeline and terms remain unspecified by either side.
