Houthis seize Red Sea islands as Saudi pipeline damage threatens oil supply

Yemen's Houthi rebels captured the strategic islands of Greater and Lesser Hanish on September 14, 2026, extending their control over critical maritime chokepoints in the Red Sea. Approximately 200 schools in southwestern Yemen have been converted to shelters, and over 2,000 people have fled across the sea to Djibouti. Trump administration officials have declined direct military intervention but agreed to provide intelligence sharing and targeting assistance. The Houthi leadership stated it does not seek to block all commercial shipping in the Red Sea, only Saudi-linked vessels. Market analysts warn that prolonged pipeline disruption, combined with depleted strategic oil reserves globally, could significantly increase oil prices in coming months.
