Real Madrid confirmed on October 25 that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will miss Sunday's La Liga match against Barcelona due to flu-like symptoms. The 34-year-old Belgian goalkeeper, who has started 12 matches across all competitions this season, is sidelined for the first time this campaign. Andriy Lunin, the Ukrainian backup, will start in goal, with 19-year-old Ilya Voloshyn added to the squad as third-choice keeper.
The match takes place at Camp Nou in the tenth round of La Liga. Real Madrid enters the fixture in third place with 21 points, six points behind league-leading Barcelona, which has won all nine of its opening matches. Atletico Madrid sits second with 25 points. A defeat would leave Madrid nine points adrift of Barcelona and four behind Atletico Madrid.
Courtois has conceded 14 goals and kept two clean sheets in 12 appearances this season, accumulating 1,080 minutes played. Lunin's last appearance for Real Madrid came on May 3 in a 2-0 victory over Espanyol. The absence of Courtois represents a significant blow to Real Madrid's defensive setup against Barcelona, one of the season's most closely watched fixtures.
Topics
Why This Matters
Courtois's absence removes Real Madrid's first-choice goalkeeper from a direct title-contention fixture at a critical juncture: Barcelona leads La Liga by six points with nine consecutive wins, and Madrid sits third, 21 points behind the leaders. Lunin's last competitive start was May 2024; defensive vulnerability in this high-stakes match could widen the 6-point gap and affect Madrid's momentum in a 38-round campaign.
